Geeks, this past weekend, scores of people across all 50 states (and beyond) raised their voices in protest. More than 1,400 “Hands Off!” demonstrations called out what organizers described as a billionaire-fueled “hostile takeover” of American rights and freedoms. From state capitols to city parks, folks gathered to say: enough. And now, in a powerful echo of that energy, a new piece of wearable tech is joining the conversation.
Enter: HndsUp—a conceptual civilian camera designed to protect Black lives during police encounters. Created by the Courageous Conversation® Global Foundation (CCGF), it’s a device the creators hope never sees the light of day. And here’s why.
HndsUp: A Smartwatch That Sees Injustice
HndsUp looks like the latest piece of smart wristwear—but its function is unlike anything else on the market. When a wearer says “hands up,” the camera activates, scans their body to show they’re unarmed, uploads footage to the cloud in real time, and even notifies emergency services if needed. It’s built for accountability, safety, and truth. But let’s be clear: this isn’t just a gadget. It’s a symbol of resistance and survival.
The Heartbreaking Stats That Make This Necessary
2024 has already become the deadliest year for police violence in the U.S., with 326 Black people killed—a 12% spike from last year. Black women are especially impacted, yet are often erased from the narrative. Body cams? Only 20% of fatal incidents are actually recorded—and when they are, 93% of footage is used against civilians, not officers. This is why HndsUp was born. Because surrender shouldn’t have to mean silence.
We Need Conversation, Not Just Cameras
Launched during International Black Women’s History Month, HndsUp uplifts the voices of Black mothers and communities who’ve long carried the burden of warning their kids about surviving police encounters.
But as CCGF’s founder Glenn Singleton says, “Real change doesn’t come from devices. It comes from honest conversations.” That’s the mission behind Courageous Conversation—delivering racial equity training, community healing, and systemic reform.
Geeks, Let’s Power On with Purpose
We love wearable tech, but HndsUp reminds us it’s not just about innovation—it’s about intention.
